Dalmatian began his professional career as a hunting dog. He was able to pass round the huge area searching game, was notable for endurance, tirelessness and scent. Because of his elegant appearance in the 17th century Dalmatian became being involved as an attendant for riding horse with noble ladies, or followed their coaches. At that time the dalmatian was in vogue as carriage dog. These dogs were allowed to be in front of the coach - they cleared the way and warned of the dangers which threatened the travelers on the road. Later, the dogs began to be trained train in such a way not to run in front of the coach, but between the rear wheels, or just under the coach. Hence, the optimal growth of the Dalmatian is no more than 61 cm. Today the standard allows increasing of the growth of dogs in 2-3 cm, while maintaining an overall balance, probably due to the fact that today a Dalmatian is no longer a carriage dog.

In the 19th century spotted dogs were used to accompany the mail coaches. In USA the Dalmatian was an employee at the fire stations. Barking loudly, sometimes a whole pack of Dalmatians was running as alive fire sirens before the running fire chariot. One of these dogs was a "Bessie from the fire department number 39." The sign of the fire brigade on the collar, a small helmet of brass showed that she belongs to the fire brigade.

After that for Dalmatians became hard times. In Yugoslavia, at the first exhibition , which was held by the Kennel Club in 1920, only a single Dalmatian was before the stern eye of the judge. After the Second World War the Dalmatian was considered a relic of an extinct Dalmatian breed, which has no future. But soon it went smoothly. Thanks to the work of European breeders, we can again discover this beautiful dog for ourselves, a symbol of natural sports. Today, Dalmatians are popular all over the world. Cheerfulness, the absence of malice for the man or beast, short hair, comfortable to live in the apartment, and, of course, an unusual and attractive color helped them to become an excellent dog-companion for the city dwellers and rural residents. However, despite their playful nature, Dalmatians are always ready to defend their owner.
